Mackie 1402VLZ Mixer

From Sound on Sound

The 1402VLZ is a general-purpose mixer suited to simple multitracking, 2- or 4-track live recording, PA or keyboard mixing. Unlike the 1202VLZ, the 1402VLZ has faders for all input channels, Control Room output and the main mix. Featuring six mic/line channels plus four stereo line channels and two stereo aux returns, the 1402VLZ has global phantom power, plus phono connections for a 2-track recorder. Each mic/line input has a switchable 75Hz, 18dB/octave low-cut filter, a gain Trim control and an insert point.

Overall, I'm extremely happy with this product. If it broke I would definitely replace it with the same model unless I had upgraded to a pro mixer. I've used it for recording, rehearsal, and live applications and it's done the job exceedingly well for all of these. The only "complaint" I have--and it's a very minor one--is that the rack-mount brackets don't come bundled with the mixer. Would it be that much of an expense to throw them in, Mackie? But again, this is very minor and nitpicky, which speaks to how great the mixer is if that's all I can find to complain about. :)

I've used other 14 to 24 channel mixers extensively and this one is certainly the best of them. The XDR mic preamps certainly are the best on any compact mixer I've tried. I've attempted to use more expensive boards' preamps and the results were horrible but with this getting my own preamp has suddenly moved off of my priority list. This has enough routing options, with inserts available for most channel and with 2 sets of stereo outs (main and alt 3-4) that I'm comfortable staying with this sized board for quite a while, even if my studio is expanding every week or two. If you're like me and are flexible enough to fit within the 14 channel limit, I would absolutely recommend this for a computer or project studio or as a sub-mixer - I may end up buying a second eventually. Absolutely solid board.
